IPA Day - The Details

August 4th has been designated ‘International IPA Day’ and Mr Foleys will be holding one of the biggest events in the country to celebrate! IPA Day was conceived as a social celebration of craft ale and lovers worldwide are encouraged to take part and interact via social networking such as Twitter.

International #IPADay is a grassroots movement to unite the voices of craft beer enthusiasts, bloggers and brewers worldwide through social media. On Thursday August 4th craft beer drinkers across the social sphere and across the globe will raise pints in a collective toast to one of craft beer’s most iconic styles; the India Pale Ale. This celebrated style represents the pinnacle of brewing innovation with it’s broad spectrum of diverse brands, subcategories and regional flavor variations, making it the perfect style to galvanize craft beer’s social voice.

#IPADay is not the brainchild of a corporate marketing machine, nor is it meant to serve any particular beer brand. #IPADay is opportunity for breweries, bloggers, businesses and consumers to connect and share their love of craft beer. Getting involved is easy; the only requirements are an appreciation for great beer and the will to spread the word. Anyone can participate by enjoying IPA with friends, making some noise online with the #IPADay hashtag and showing the world that craft beer is more than a trend!

At Mr Foleys we will have some of the finest examples of the style from some of Britain’s best brewers. Our beers will include four keg IPAs; two from Brewdog and one each from local West Yorkshire breweries Summer Wine and Magic Rock. We will have six cask IPAs coming from Thornbridge, Buxton, Kirkstall, Roosters, Hardknott and Red Willow. If that’s not enough for you, we will have a dedicated IPA fridge serving you some of the best from America, as well as a couple more rarely seen British brews.

Still not enough? We will have brewers or brewery representatives from every brewery mentioned above and each will be holding mini ‘meet the brewer’ segments to promote their beer to the assembled crowd. We will also have guest appearances from beer writers Zak Avery and Mark Fletcher, who will be talking you through the history of IPA, why they love the style and some of their favourite beers.

With all this beer we will be in need of food. Details are still being ironed out, but we are hoping to have some top quality Indian cuisine available as we feel it not only fits the history of the beer, but that beers big in bitterness and hop character are the perfect accompaniment for spicy dishes.

IPA Day!!

August 4th has been Designated 'World IPA Day' and here at Mr Foleys we love a good IPA, so have decided to create an event worthy of this fantastic style of beer.

The idea for IPA Day cam from @TheBeerwench and @RyanARoss as a way to unite lovers of craft beer by promoting its most popular style, and by using social websites such as blogs and Twitter (use the hashtag #IPADay) to create one voice for the craft beer world. As you can see by the official poster on the right, some world class brewers are already signed up, streching from the USA to New Zealand, via our very own Summer Wine Brewery here in West Yorkshire!

We have big plans. We will have 4 Kegs lines, 6 Cask lines and one whole fridge dedicated purely to IPA. The event will run all day on Thursday 4th August, and alongside the fantastic beers you can expect to see the Brewers behind them, and some of your favourite beer bloggers to tell you why they love IPA and what some of their favourites are!!

We will be announcing the beers over the coming weeks, so keep checking back to our blog or Twitter account for regular updates, but I can guarentee some special suprises, so make sure you put the date in your diary, you dont want to be anywhere else, trust me!

Whisky Tasting Evening

On Tuesday the 28th September we are hosting a FREE!, that right, FREE! whisky tasting evening. Our Malt Whisky masterclass will be presented by an industy expert, and will feature a range of 4 classic malts for you to sample.

No tickets are needed, all you need to do is turn up!

For those of you who know us, you will be aware Mr Foley's love beer. From traditional English cask conditioned ales, to bottled beers from Belgium, USA, Germany, and many more. However, there is a nation on our doorstep we have yet to explore........

Beginning on St Patricks Day (wed 17th March) our Irish Beer Festival kicks off, featuring beers imported from brewers accross Northern and the Republic of Ireland. The Brewers include;

Hilden - One of Ireland oldest independant breweries

Messrs Maguire - Dublin based brewery

College Green - Irelands newest arrival, from Belfast

Franciscan Well - Built on the site of an old Franciscan monastery in Cork

White Gypsy - From Tipperary, which is a long way you know!

The beers are cask conditioned, and available in very limited amounts, so early attendance is advised. We hope to see you there!

Mr Foley's Irish Beer Festival

Something we have wanted to do for a while is finally happening! This St. Patrick's day will see the start of the very first Irish Beer Festival down at Mr Foley's. We have a number of cask ales being imported from various brewers from Ireland, including Messyrs Maguires and Fransican Well.

There is only a limited supply available, so we recommend you come within the first 24-48 hours not to be disappointed!

We also have a range of Irish whiskies and our chef will be coming up with his very own Irish stew especially for the occasion.

Leeds CAMRA 'Pub of the Year 08/09' Presentation

The presentation of our Pub of the Year award will be taking place on Sunday 26th July at 4pm. We will make sure the bar is stocked full of mouth-wateringly tasty beer as always, and there will be a free buffet snack in the back room.

Mr Foley's Wins Leeds CAMRA 'Pub of the Year 08/09'

It is my pride and honour to announce that we have been voted this years 'Pub of the Year' by those good fellows at Leeds CAMRA! We are very proud to have achieved this award, and will be doing our upmost to improve on the standards expected from us!

A presentation will be held in the near future, with a free buffet and some fantastic beer. All are invited, and we will update you with further details soon.

New Beers!

We have some fantastic new products at the bar in Foley's.

Sleemans IPA (5.3%) is a distinctive ale of golden amber colour, this India Pale Ale is characterised by a malty sweetness at the beginning of the palate and finishes with a hoppy slight bitterness at the end.

Moravka (5%) is an unpasturised Czech lager that has won rave reviews from experts, beer guru's, bloggers, and just about everyone who has tried it! Brewed under licience on a small farm in Derbyshire, Moravka is a rare treasure in the world of lager.

And in the fridge;

Barnard Dark(5.1%) is a gold medal winner in the World Beer Championships. Deep brown black teak color. Very even aromas of dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and wet earth. A round, velvety entry leads to a rich, medium-to-full body of roasted espresso, cocoa, and nut flavors. Finishes with a round even fade and lingering nutty earthiness. Very nicely balanced, harmonious and elegant with a great soft mouthfeel.

Another from the Czech Republic comes in the form of Bernard Celebration(5%). Celebration is described as a champagne -type beer, whose final fermentation takes place in the bottles. It is unigue in its flavour, delicate yeast flavour and aroma.

From Belgium we have Orval (6.2%). Orval has a complex and unusual flavor and aroma produced by a unique strain of yeast. The beer is light in color, slightly cloudy, and has a large, foamy head. There is a complex aroma of leather, horse blanket, spice, and many other earthy components.

And finally, all the way from the USA is Samual Adams Boston Lager(4.8%). Sam Adams is a fine example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. The exclusive use of two row barley not only imparts a full, smooth body but also gives the beer a wide spectrum of malt flavor ranging from slightly sweet to caramel to slightly roasted.

More beers are due to arrive in the coming weeks so call in and have a taste!
